Writing a self-description for an “About Me" section is surprisingly difficult. I’m not a writer, but I write. I haven’t published any books, yet I’ve written thousands of articles—covering film, music, reading, and the things I care about. When it comes to reading, I consider myself an “ordinary reader,” clearly borrowing from Virginia Woolf’s title. I’m not particularly adept at social graces, but I believe writing allows me to be someone less bound by the mundane. After years of reviewing films and music, conducting interviews, and essentially telling other people’s stories, I’ve decided to return to my own room—perhaps to write a novel, an essay, or a script. I’m Ethan—maybe someone you’ve come across in a newspaper column or on the liner notes of an album.
